American Electric Power Communications Representative in Columbus, Ohio

Position Summary :
The responsibilities of the Communications Representative include a mix of media relations, financial communications, event planning, writing for digital channels and speechwriting. These responsibilities require strong writing, editing and communications skills. The candidate selected for this position will assist in the development of communications strategies and deliverables to help AEP effectively communicate the company's positions on legislative, environmental, regulatory, financial and other issues to a variety of external stakeholders. This position is based out of AEP's corporate office in Columbus, Ohio, within the Corporate Communications Department.
Develop news releases, external talking points, and media relations plans. Respond to inquiries, coordinate interviews and proactively pitch stories to reporters with national, regional, financial, trade and/or wire news organizations.
Develop effective communications plans and/or advocacy campaigns to educate external audiences and AEP employees about the company's positions and issues.
Work with AEP's Investor Relations team to develop financial-related communications and plan AEP's annual meeting of shareholders.
Provide support for social media messaging including developing and implementing plans and content targeted to media, policy makers and other key stakeholders through social media and other digital channels.
Manage ongoing messaging and content updates for AEP's corporate website.
Assist with executive communications support, including development of talking points for the CEO and other members of the executive management team.

Education: Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations or related field, or equivalent education and/or experience. Demonstrated oral and written communications skills.
Experience: Five (5) years of experience in a corporate/agency/nonprofit setting or newspaper or broadcast news.
Preferred Qualifications/Other Requirements:
Experience working with the media and writing for external audiences, including experience telling stories through engaging digital content to support a non-profit or corporate brand.
Proven track record in planning successful corporate events such as annual shareholder meetings, news conferences or promotional events.
Ability to build and maintain media lists and monitor media coverage with Cision or similar platform is beneficial in this role.
